Morada or Verde?

¿Morada o Verde? La misma violeta, dos ánimos.

Every bottle in the house descends from one violet. These two are that violet at its purest, and the question every first-time buyer asks is which one. Here is the honest answer.

Violeta Habanera Verde, the 8 oz bottle

The same violet, two moods

Morada and Verde share the same heart: violet and iris over a powdery, talc-soft base. What changes is the opening and the temperature. One leans purple and warm, the other green and cold.

Neither is stronger or better. Cuban households usually keep both, one for the morning and one for the evening, one for the children and one for the grandparents.

Morada: the original

Morada is the agua de violetas as Havana knew it: bergamot and a green leaf on top, violet and iris at the heart, musk and talcum powder underneath. Deep, purple, unmistakably powdery.

It is the one that smells like memory. If someone in your family wore agua de violetas, this is almost certainly the bottle. Wear it after the bath, at night, or on anyone you want to smell like a Sunday.

Verde: the same violet, off the ice

Verde opens with crushed leaf and mint, keeps the violet and adds green stem, and finishes on a cold musk. It is the violet after a rainstorm rather than in a drawer of linen.

It is the easier first splash for someone new to violet water, and the better bottle for a Miami afternoon. Men who find Morada too sweet usually settle here.

Which one to start with

Grew up with it: Morada. New to it: Verde. Buying for a baby or a grandparent: Morada, because that is the scent they will recognise. Buying for yourself in the heat: Verde.

Both come in the 8 oz splash bottle and the 14 oz. Most families end up with one of each within the year.

Is Verde just a lighter Morada?
No. It is the same violet with a different opening and base: mint and crushed leaf on top, cold musk underneath. It reads greener, not fainter.
Which one is the traditional agua de violetas for babies?
Morada, the original, the one the family has used on its own children since 1962. A little goes a long way.
Do they last the same?
About the same, a few hours, softening as they go. Both are made to be reapplied by the handful.
Can I wear them together?
Many do: Verde in the morning, Morada at night. They are the same family, so they never argue on the skin.
